June 15th-19th - 3rd Class - English

Hi there,

Good morning, I hope you all had a lovely weekend!

This week you can look at doing the following activities. However, there is no pressure to complete everything – the main thing is that you are all safe and well and getting out for some exercise.

Suggested Activities:

  • Sound of the week – Revision of words containing the sound u_e, for example tube and huge. You could try to think of words which have this sound, and then to put these words into sentences. A good online resource for these words and sentences containing them is https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/list-249.htm

  • Mindfulness Activity – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSUbuM3pT4E. This calming mindfulness activity tries to get rid of any ‘yucky’ feelings you might have, by shaking off the bad feelings, and moving on. Like a dog on the beach who has just left the water (as you will see in the video!) you can move your body to shake away the feelings and after this you should feel a little better and more relaxed.

  • Reading Comprehension – The reading focus for this week should be Determining Importance. You must decide, as you are reading the comprehension attached below about treasures in the garden, which parts of the reading are important and must be focused on. You could try writing down five important things (short sentences) while you are reading.

Example: Holly and Jake collected a golden coin from the pirate ship.

When you are answering the questions at the end, check if anything you wrote down is mentioned in the questions. This strategy helps you focus on parts of a reading which are important rather than every bit of information which is given.

  • Speaking – The topic for this week is Discussions. I am attaching some discussion cards which are based on the topic of ‘water safety’. You can read each card which describes a situation and discuss what you would do. For example, what kind of rules do you need to follow when you go to a swimming pool? The second set of cards ask you to talk for one minute about a topic – remember to set a timer! The third activity involves a ‘would you rather’ challenge where you must discuss which idea you prefer when given a choice.

If you would like to get in touch to check in, or have any work to be corrected this can submitted through Aladdin Connect, or by email on room13c@stbrigidsthecoombe.ie. I would love to see some of the children’s work and hear how they are getting on!

Take care and have a happy and healthy week,

Ms. Healy
